Summary
These past two years in the dental hygiene program has been an enlightening journey. Growing from mistakes and achieving personal gratification has made it an experience I will never forget. Thinking about being able to apply the skills I have built and refined to patients as a career has me enthused to say the least. Some of these skills I implemented in the clinic the last two years are included in this site, such as, nutritional and tobacco cessation counseling, disease prevention, and completing a case study on a select patient. Before partaking in this program, I would have never known how these topics even fit in to the practice of a dental professional. There were many fulfilling moments throughout this program, including teaching both adults and children the proper ways to care for their entire oral cavity and traveling to elementary schools to provide preventive care. From these experiences I have learned how to create a warm and welcoming environment for patients to trust me. This is such an important part of clinical practice; a patient should never have to wonder if they can trust their healthcare provider. I have not only grown as a person; but I have also grown as a clinician. My hard work and persistence will be paying off shortly and I look forward to achieving so much more once I take the next step in my journey. Many people supported me throughout this endeavor and I could not thank them enough. Here is to becoming an RDH and fulfilling my dreams as well as my own expectations.
